Quiet Hungary

Posted 4 April 2008 - Debrecen (HU):

Away from Romania, I am now in Hungary which is a lot quieter than Romania. This is the main street of Debrecen, Hungary`s second biggest city and main university town after Budapest.

Imported trams

Posted 5 April 2008 - Miskolc (HU):

Trams in Hungary are nice, especially when they are not Hungarian :) This one was imported straight from Vienna!

Discovering Budapest

Posted 6 Apr 2008 - Budapest (HU):

Sorry for being slow and once again lagging behind with postings, skipping one every now and then.. I`m only human..

Today was my first entire day in Budapest and I explored the city with my Hungarian host and an Albanian exchange student. We went cycling in the city, but somehow the bikes are missing in the photo. Shit happens, fortunately they did not disappear in real life.

Hungarian food

Posted 9 April 2008 - Szeged (HU):

Meal shared with Hungarian, Italian and Spanish people in a restaurant that looks like times have stood still for the last 20 years. Very tasty food though!

Final days in Hungary

Posted 14 April 2008 - Székesfehérvár (HU);

Hello from Hungary again. I`m in the city of Székesfehérvár, which is quite hard to pronounce but otherwise a nice place. I will move on to Budapest tonight to meet up with a fellow Dutch guy who has participated in a project somewhat similar to mine a few years ago. He now edits a pan-European magazine and we agreed to meet in Budapest to share some experiences. That should be a nice end to my Hungary adventure. On Wednesday, I will leave for Slovenia, a country which I have only briefly visited at an earlier occasion. That tasted like more, so I`m quite eager to go there again!

Slovenian cross road

Posted 19 April 2008 - Maribor (SI):

Here`s the first Slovenian cross road. For the many traffic signs who are following my adventures: Slovenian signs use the same font as the Belgians.

Choir contest

Posted 19 April 2008 - Maribor (SI):

Lots of singing in Maribor last night. I met a group of Dutch choir singers who were performing in an international competition. They sang three songs, the last of one being very untraditional. It wasn`t really a song, more of a vocal representation of people talking to each other in many different ways: angry, sad, comforting, etc etc. Initially, the performance of that `song` led to many a raised eye brow within the audience, but the following ovation exceeded all the ones before.

For everyone who ever wondered where `Svetje` was located: in Slovenia. Here`s a random portrait of the road leading into the village.

Spring scene

Posted 23 April 2008 - Ljubljana (SI):

This is the city centre of Ljubljana on a sunny spring day. People sitting around, eating ice cream, looking at others, talking to friends, doing nothing, enjoying themselves..

Beautiful landscapes

Posted 24 April 2008 - Bled (SI):

Slovenia is one of the prettiest countries I have ever been to. It`s got many different landscapes, cloudscapes and beautiful colours. Also, the air is really fresh and I keep noticing it everytime I get off a train or a bus. Everything`s clean and refreshing and I will for sure come back here another time for some hiking, cycling or rafting.

Slovenia is another entry on the list of places to go back to. Other ones that rank high: Scottish highlands, Lapland, Sweden overall, Paris (what`s new?), Ireland (taught myself to sing the Irish anthem in Gaelic ;), and The Netherlands in three months time..

Horizontal traffic lights

Posted 25 April 2008 - Ljubljana (SI):

Another cross road, this time with horizontal traffic lights, woohoo... Starting later today, will be off for two days of Croatia, which is not a member of the EU, but I will go there with Slovenians so should be safe for the interviews, the project and everything. After that, I plan to visit the Slovenian sea side, the divided city of Nova Gorica, Venice and two of my old class mates in Italy! Then slowly heading North towards Munich/München/Monaco/Monachium to collect my brother from the station on May 6th.

Escaping the EU

Posted 26 April 2008 - Pazin (HR):

I briefly sneaked across the border for a CouchSurfing meeting in the Croatian peninsula of Istria, which has belonged to many different country over the past 100 years. As one Croatian guy told me, his grandmother was born in Austria-Hungary, his mother in Italy, he himself in Yugoslavia and his daughter in Croatia. Yet they were all born in the same place, it just kept switching ownership.

Anyway, below photo shows the location where we started our hike. The four cars in the background belong to some members of the group. I don`t know who parked that wonderful Opel Ascona against the tree.

Music maestro

Posted 27 April 2008 - Koper (SI):

At the same village as yesterday`s photo, here`s a bunch of guys who decided to welcome us with some music and wine. A nice way of meeting the locals - and a good moment to sneak away from a group to also take some other photos in the same village.

Quick updatum from Italy

Posted 30 April 2008 - Padova (IT):

I can`t complain about the European year of Intercultural dialogue anymore, since they posted my press release on their website yesterday. You can tell from the numbers that it took them a while! Greece, Bulgaria and Romania are now long behind :)

Everything else is fine although I am missing another edition of Dutch Queen`s Day. Other news: I left Slovenia and am now back in Italy. I stayed over at Carolina and Lorenzo`s place last night, two classmates from Clermont Ferrand (2000) who now have a baby and are expecting another one. I probably don`t need to specify that I also interviewed them. There article will be online per tonight.
